Dance music is an outdoor thing for Donato Dozzy. You never get the sense that his music is taking place inside the club: This is a music of rivers, swamps, open ocean. The Italian producer’s 2012 masterpiece Voices From the Lake, with Neel, was conceived for a set at Japan’s mountainside Labyrinth festival, and the music seemed designed to burble from the very environment, as if created by the chirping of crickets and the rustling of birds in the underbrush. Everything has a rhythm, it seemed to say. Dozzy’s solo albums tend toward focused explorations of a single style, sound,…
Boygenius-mania was only the most visible sign of the fantastic year indie-rock had in 2023, with strong albums from newcomers (Blondshell, Kara Jackson), established stars (Mitski) and veterans (Wilco, the National). In the new episode of Rolling Stone Music Now, we go through some highlights of the year in indie albums. Trending Jon Dolan, Angie Martoccio, and Simon Vozick-Levinson join host Brian Hiatt for the discussion. Among many other topics, we touch on Mitski’s surprise hit “My Love Mine All Mine,” which our panelists agree isn’t even the best song on the album it came from, This Land Is Inhospitable…
The surviving members of Nirvana and others from the Seattle music scene have paid tribute to their former publicist, Susie Tennant, who has passed away on Friday (January 19) at the age of 61. Tennant’s death was announced by the “Susie Tennant Fan Club” Facebook page, which was created by Seattle’s music community. According to her husband Christopher Swenson, she passed away surrounded by family members. She had suffered from a rare form of early-onset dementia, named frontotemporal degeneration. Susie passed away yesterday surrounded by family and love. She was calm and at peace. Thank you all for your love…
They say of Donald Trump, “The cruelty is the point.” For Ron DeSantis, we might amend that to say, “The cruelty was pointless.” Rarely in American politics has a civic leader, a governor no less, used his official power to marginalize, demean, and endanger so many — in the naked service of career advancement — only to fall so spectacularly flat. In the case of DeSantis, the Florida governor got trounced by Trump in the Iowa Republican caucuses. And despite his “Never Back Down” branding, DeSantis raised the white flag of surrender before having to face new embarrassment in the…
After months on political life support, Ron DeSantis has finally put himself — and everyone else — out of his misery and suspended his campaign for the 2024 Republican nomination. While the Florida governor ran on a wet dream policy package for extremist, culture war-obsessed conservatives, his campaign simply could not overcome its biggest obstacle: Ron DeSantis himself. American presidential politics has a storied history of promising candidates tanking over awkward moments and unfortunate gaffes. Jeb Bush begging his audience to “please clap,” Howard Dean’s scream, Richard Nixon looking super sweaty during a debate against John F. Kennedy, and Michael…

With Ron DeSantis conveniently out of the GOP primary race, Donald Trump set his sights on Nikki Haley, his nearest opponent who still trails him by double-digits in the polls. The former South Carolina governor and Trump cabinet member has recently questioned the former president’s mental fitness after he confused her name with Nancy Pelosi’s at a rally. “Here in New Hampshire, Nikki Haley has made an unholy alliance with RINOs, Never Trumpers, Americans for No Prosperity,” Trump said, referring to Americans for Prosperity, a conservative group that endorsed Haley in December. “Did you ever hear of Americans for No…
