Paolo Belli come back with Scent of summerthe new single on the radio and on all digital platforms for CinicoDisenchanto/Artist First. A song built on funk sounds, horns in the foreground and a summery refrain which however hides a critical look at the present. Behind the energy of the music, in fact, the Emilian singer and host focuses on an increasingly current theme: the relationship with social networks, the search for appearance and the need to rediscover a more authentic dimension of everyday life. Paolo Belli between irony and criticism of social media In the text of Scent of summer,…
The front cover of Every Single Muscle, the new album from smalltown Welsh duo The Bug Club, depicts a hypervascular cartoon man-bull launching into space. With its eight pendulous nipples, surgically remodeled chin, and miles-long fleshy torso trailing grotesquely in its wake, the monster is a fitting mascot for an album whose gaze never falls far from the human body’s folds, crevices, hanging-off bits. This is The Bug Club’s sixth album in four years, in which time they’ve crossed the Atlantic so often and built enough of a reputation behind their oddball garage-pop that they’ve signed to faraway Sub Pop. Even…
The innovations of Berlin’s Basic Channel in the mid-’90s led to a whole new way of thinking about dance music, introducing countless producers to the possibilities of reverb and delay. Producers have been working off the template they set for dub techno ever since. Less often imitated is the duo’s work as Rhythm & Sound, where they slowed their music to reggae tempos and hewed closer to the Jamaican innovations that informed their trippy production tricks. This sound is having a small moment right now. Stuttgart’s Ghost Dubs has made a career of it, both solo and with a fired-up…
The ambient producer Jake Muir has a gift for hearing depth in sounds that might otherwise be deemed forgettable. The omnipresent church bells that fade into the background of European city life became the focal point of Campana Sonans, his brilliant album of manipulated field recordings from Berlin. On Bathhouse Blues, he sampled incidental music from vintage gay porn films, finding a dark pulse wriggling beneath their surface eroticism. Muir’s latest album, Pareidolia, mines the oft-overlooked intros, outros, and interludes of hundreds of extreme metal albums for raw material, reshaping them into a menacing, inscrutable, richly textured collage. There’s no…
Netflix deal or no, Vince Staples will tell the hell out of a story. For those keeping track, it may feel like his new album, Cry Baby, is finally making good on his assertion from two albums ago that he’d be leaving his traumatic past and complex Long Beach neighborhood behind him, material-wise. It turned out those records, Ramona Park Broke My Heart and Dark Times, were not a stark pivot, but an elaborate interstitial, entangling memories of hardship and community into his present psyche. Cry Baby, essentially a rock album, is instead a reflection and rebuttal to American instability…
The American Federation of Musicians (AFM), a union for session musicians, is suing Universal Music Group (UMG) and Warner Music Group (WMG) for breaching their collective bargaining agreement over use of their music by AI programs. In the lawsuit filed on Friday (June 5), AFM claim that the major labels’ recent licensing training with Suno and Udio, two prominent AI music companies, have not been sharing proceeds with the union, as required in their agreement to compensate members for “new uses” of their music.“The AFM brings this lawsuit because defendants, two of the largest music companies in the world, have…

Gorillaz were introduced at Primavera Sound by Palestinian activist Aarab Barghouti, the son of imprisoned politician Marwan Barghouti. Damon Albarn and co. played on the Barcelona festival’s Estrella Damm stage on Saturday night (June 6) and invited Barghouti to give a speech to open their set. The activist’s father has served as an elected legislator in Palestine and has been tipped as a potential future leader, but he has been imprisoned by Israel since 2002 after being convicted on charges related to deadly attacks during the Second Intifada. He has consistently denied responsibility for those attacks and rejected the legitimacy of the Israeli court that tried…
