Horses' story
In the autumn of 1975, Patti Smith gathered his band at the Electric Lady Studios in New York to record his debut album, Horses. Published on 10 November by Arista Records, it has become an essential seminal work and point of reference, still maintaining an extraordinary relevance for generations of musicians and artists.
The sound manifesto of Horses It was clear: “Rock with three melted agreements with the power of the word“. Poetess and visual artist, Patti had started two years earlier to improvise his unmistakable mix of vision songs and images, performing on the stages of cabaret and in the small clubs, flanked by guitarist Lenny Kaye and pianist Richard Sohl.
Her live performances allowed her to refine the songs, winning an ever wider audience in Manhattan's underground. When, in the winter of 1975, a seven -week residency began at the CBGB (a club then little known to Bowerry), his band had expanded with guitarist Ivan Kral and drummer Jay Dee Daugherty. Precisely at that time, Patti signed a contract with Clive Davis, president of the Arista Records. John Cale was chosen as producer of the album which was released on November 10, a symbolic date: the anniversary of the death of one of Patti's major artistic references, the poet Arthur Rimbaud.
The album opens with a dazzling personal declaration: “Jesus Daed for Somebody's Since But Not Mine,” intertwined within the Van Morrison classic, Glory. HorsesIt represented a return to the primordial instincts of rock, with the intent to awaken the spirit and promise of music in a period in which it seemed that that vitality was about to get lost. The artistic soul of the disc also takes shape on the basis of compositions in which the sound landscapes of the free jazz merge with propulsive rhythms and enchanting texts present in Birdland And Land. While songs like Redondo Beach, Free money, Kimberly And Break it up They offered (and still do it today after fifty years) an idealistic vision of the world and at the same time romantic. With the final trace, Elegiesthe past and the future of rock were intertwined in that “sea of possibilities” that became the present.
Imbued with poetry, Horses It is an uncompromising exploration that laid the foundations for the punk wave, even if Patti and his band have always tried to escape any label, as she herself wrote in the notes of the album: “Beyond Race Gender Baptism Mathematics Politricks“, Adding: “… As for me the am trialtaly ready to go“.
The iconic photography of Robert Mapplethorpe on the cover of the album, which portrays pacts with the jacket thrown on the shoulder, perfectly captured that moment of transformation.
Horses He marked the beginning of a long musical career that still resounds today with greater intensity. Over the years the album has received numerous awards, including the Charles Cros Award, and has been included in the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress.
Since then Patti has released nine other albums, won the National Book Award with Just Kidstackled world tours and obtained entry into the rock and roll hall of Fame.
