“I just bawled, absolutely bawled,” Ted Lasso star Brendan Hunt said about hearing the singer-songwriter’s rendition of the theme originally performed by Marcus Mumford
Ted Lasso finale season is upon us again. The 10th and final episode of the Apple TV series’ fourth season premiered Wednesday, Oct. 7, with a special guest appearance tucked into the opening theme song — not a physical appearance, but a voice: that of Brandi Carlile.
Carlile performed her rendition of “Ted Lasso Theme” for the finale. The song was originally co-written and performed by Mumford & Sons’ Marcus Mumford with composer Tom Howe. It’s a fitting shift for the season, which follows Jason Sudeikis’ Ted Lasso as he coaches an all-women soccer team.
Ted Lasso originally concluded with its third season in 2023 — there was a lackluster but still touching at times series finale and everything. But the show had some unfinished business on the field. Apple TV announced its plan to revive Ted Lasso in early 2025, though no plot or cast details were revealed at the time. Sudeikis returned along with Brett Goldstein, Brendan Hunt, Juno Temple, Hannah Waddingham, and Jeremy Swift.
Back in 2021, shortly after Season Two concluded, Sudeikis hosted Saturday Night Live with Carlile as musical guest. The crossover laid the foundation for the new theme song. The actor invited his costar, Hunt, over to hear it for the first time as a surprise. “He said, ‘I got something to play for you guys,’ and he played me the full-length version of Brandi’s new version of the theme,” Hunt told Variety. “I just bawled, absolutely bawled.”
He added a call for Apple to share the recording in full. “I hope that Apple puts out the whole recording because the 30-second snippet we get for the credits is one thing, but the full version is just staggering,” he said. “It’s her and the whole band and everybody is bringing their ‘A’ game for it. It’s really, really powerful.”
