Duff said she hoped “CATastrophe” would be “something you’d turn all the way up in the car.” Mission accomplished
Hilary Duff has released a song for The Cat in the Hat soundtrack, fittingly titled “CATastrophe.”
Co-written with Duff’s husband and collaborator Matthew Koma, as well as Madison Love and Brian Phillips, the track is a hypnotic pop gem with clever, feline-friendly lines: “Hey, I got nine lives,” she sings. “Let’s live one up tonight.” In the video, she unpacks several boxes, and dives into a psychedelic Dr. Seuss-like world.
On her Instagram story, Duff shared a video of her in the studio recording the track, explaining that she’s a “lifelong” Cat in the Hat fan. In a separate statement, she added that Dr. Seuss “was on repeat” in her house for years. “So when this came around, I didn’t have to think about it,” she said.
“‘CATastrophe’ is about that feeling when your whole world gets picked up and moved somewhere else and nobody asks you first,” Duff added. “I wanted it to be honest about those feelings, and still be something you’d turn all the way up in the car.” Mission accomplished.
The Cat in the Hat (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) arrives Oct. 30, while the animated film, starring Bill Hader, hits theaters on Nov. 6. As for Duff, she recently revealed 2027 tour dates, behind her excellent new album, Luck…or Something, her first record in over a decade. Her tour has been a celebration for millennials, particularly her two nights at New York’s Madison Square Garden last month. “It was super healing to make something that felt exactly like me, and where I am right now,” she told Rolling Stone.
