For the first time on the same stage, Roberto Mercadini and Emma Nolde they give life to You who feel the hurricane on your sides: a show in which poetry and song dialogue to talk about human fragility, the need for empathy and the desire to look at the world with different eyes.
The seed from which it sprouts You who feel the hurricane on your sides it is in fact enshrined in a simple question: can songs and poems talk – together – about us, human beings?
Here, with this show Roberto Mercadini and Emma Nolde try to answer this question, showing how these two sister art forms have always shared the same tension.
“You who feel the hurricane at your sides”: the meeting between Roberto Mercadini and Emma Nolde
“Emma's voice was brought to me by the algorithm“, says Roberto Mercadini. “Among those suggested was a record with a strange cover: a young woman in profile, with her eyes closed, immersed in a mixture that seemed to be incandescent.
I listened to that voice: it was poignant. Sometimes he sang as if he were leading a whole legion; others seemed alone in the world. I listened to all the songs on that record; then those of the other. And again those of both.
Subsequently, I discovered that our lives had already touched in the past, at least electronically. Sometimes people gravitate around each other like dreams or ghosts, before actually meeting“.
In fact, Emma met Roberto at 19, before he even met her. And he says: “I started watching his videos with great hunger, then reading his books and quoting him almost every day. When we met in person I felt the enthusiasm that you only feel when you truly fall in love with something.
Intricate stories and very complicated laws of physics live in Roberto's head, but he knows how to do the most difficult thing in the world: simplify. For years his voice has kept me company during many sleepless nights. You can imagine how strange and beautiful it is for me to share the same stage with him“.
Roberto Marcadini & Emma Nolde: “You who feel the hurricane at your sides”
What happens when you look at the world through the eyes of a dog? When a poem by Giovanni Pascoli dialogues with a song by Marco Castello? When do futurist onomatopoeias seem to anticipate the “dirties” of contemporary rap?
On stage Roberto Mercadini and Emma Nolde try to give answers to all these questions. And so their voices alternate, chase each other and intertwine. He tells and interprets verses, she puts her voice at the service of emotions through songs.
The end result? A path that – with lightness and depth – passes through contemporary poetry (Roberto Mercadini, Valerio Magrellietc.) to that of the twentieth century (Giovanni Pascoli, Wislawa Szymborskaetc.), and then arriving at today's songwriting (Emma Nolde, Luigi Tenco, Giovanni Truppi and many others), thus bringing together distant worlds and revealing unexpected affinities.
