Before him Smashing Pumpkins were the iconic, GRAMMY® Award-winning, generation-defining band that fans have known and loved for decades, they were a young group trying to make their way in the vibrant rock scene of the early '90s. Thirty-five years ago, the Smashing Pumpkins introduced themselves to the world with Gisha debut album that would become one of the most important records of the early '90s.
To celebrate the 35th anniversary of the albumthe following vinyl versions are available from today HERE:
- 180 gram gray vinyl, with pink and purple splatter, inside the original 1991 packaging, limited edition;
- Standard 180 gram black vinyl, in original 1991 packaging.
Reflecting on the album's legacy, Jimmy Chamberlin stated: “Gish embodies all of our hopes, aspirations and abilities during that extraordinary time, giving listeners a unique glimpse into the insights and creative energy that would come to define the Smashing Pumpkins' artistic identity.”
Originally published May 28, 1991 for Caroline Records, Gish became one of the most successful independent albums of its era and one of the most commercially successful independent rock albums of the early 1990s, helping to redefine the possibilities of alternative music on an independent label. The Smashing Pumpkins they recorded the album with producer Butch Vig at Smart Studios in Madison. Although sometimes associated with grunge in the early days, the Smashing Pumpkins were much more than that, the band mixing rock, metal, psychedelia, pop and shoegaze. The album set the stage for the incredible success that the Pumpkins would experience for the rest of the decade, thanks also to songs like “I Am One”, “Siva” and “Rhinoceros” which would later help bring Gish to Platinum status. The influence of an album of this magnitude continues to be felt from generation to generation, with numerous trade publications considering it one of the most important musical albums in the history of rock.
The reprints of Gish they are the latest chapter in a series of initiatives dedicated to the great successes of the Smashing Pumpkins' early years.
Last year on the occasion of the 30th Anniversary of Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadnesscertified diamond, a deluxe vinyl reissue has been released with previously unreleased live recordings from the world tour in support of the album, a special reinterpretation of Mellon Collie's hits created together with the Lyric Opera Of Chicago.
The reprint for the was also published the same year 25th anniversary of Machina/The Machines Of God.
The Smashing Pumpkins also announced the Rats In A Cage tourrunning from September to November, which will see the band perform two distinct sets: one celebrating Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness and one spanning nearly four decades of the band's hits, with songs ranging from Gish to their latest album, Aghori Mhori Mei.
