In an era of climatic urgency, Yann Tiersen redefines the concept of tour and challenges capitalist rules. A first taste is attributable to its lonely winter tour with which she crossed Europe, from Brest to Tallinn, without crew, accompanied only by its dog, guiding no more than 60 km/h with its van, avoiding the usual specks of consumerism from tour (hotels, dressing rooms), asking for hospitality from ordinary people. A unique experience that also allowed him to travel aboard his sailing boat Ninnogsailing through Ireland, the Faroe Islands, Scotland, Shetland, Wales and Cornwall, thus bringing its music within extraordinary landscapes and intimate contexts, also creating solid ties with numerous local organizers.
Rathlin from a distance | The Liquid Hour It is an album divided into two distinct parts but at the same time interconnected from each other, each with unique sound characteristics. Rathlin from distance it consists of eight tracks of introspective instrumental piano, while The Liquid Hour It is a large mixture of electronics and psychedelic rhythms that challenges all kinds.
Rathlin from distance It takes its name from an island of Northern Ireland, it contains eight instrumental songs for piano, each of which bears the name of a location that Tiersen visited during its 2023 sailing trip trip. From Fastnet lighthouse to the Atlantic to the Faroe Islands, to the Shetland and to the quiet waters of the Caledonia channel in Scotland, these songs reflect a journey to discover self and their own. The work on the piano of Tiersen creates an almost hypnotic atmosphere, in which each stage of the journey marks a deeper level of consciousness. Music evokes a sense of space, introspection and peaceful contemplation. So Tiersen describes this part of his work: “There is something transformative in being immersed in the sea. Far from the noise and weight of the world, we find ourselves with the raw and indomitable forces of nature – and with yourself. It is a space in which you can start to question your beliefs, your identity, your kind, even the person you thought you were. I started to free me of the expectations, from the constructs and the roles that society imposes on us.” And he continues: “Rathlin from distance is born from this experience. Each song for piano is linked to a place we have visited, but also to a moment of meditation. It is as if I had traced the self maps inside. Each trace is destined to guide you towards the deepest nucleus, to discover your true self, not the version of yourself shaped by society's expectations. It is an invitation to connect, to be vulnerable and find comfort in the authenticity that derives from facing the forces that surround us – and within us “.
While Rathlin from distance is meditative, The Liquid Hour It is a bold and urgent musical declaration, which opens with an epic and overwhelming song that channels the desire for Tiersen of a social and political change. The inspiration for this section of the album was born from the experiences at sea of Tiersen, in particular from a time when he admired the Belfast lights, alone at the helm of his sailing boat in the middle of the night, after almost two months of navigation. This moment of serenity has led to profound reflections on the troubled history of the city and its link with wider political struggles. The large sound palette of The Liquid Hour Mix atmospheric ambient music, hypnotic grooves and electronic instrumentation of great impact, with the bewitching voice of Émilie Quinquis that adds a powerful size to the album message. Tiersen explains “I think of the bruises left by the systems that fierce against us, I feel the fury that climbs – ancient, raw, electric. Burn inside me. The water becomes a mirror of my anger. And of hope. There is a war to fight against the suffocating lives of capitalism, which bind our roots and steal our light. It is a destruction of everything that is broken. space for despair.
