There are completely legal marriages that aren't nearly as strong as the possibly, potentially real one Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves entered into while filming Dracula. Ever since a real Romanian priest was used during their wedding scene in the 1992 Francis Ford Coppola film, the couple have continued to honor the union with a wholesome text tradition.
“We always say who it is, even though it says it on the text,” Ryder shared during a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcasts. “So, like, on his birthday di lui, I go: 'Happy birthday, my husband.' And then he's like, 'Hey, my wife, I love you. KR 57.' Like, on each birthday, he's like KR 57 or whatever his age is. He's always done that.”
Reeves celebrated in 60th birthday earlier this week, while Ryder will turn 53 late next month. Their Dracula characters, Jonathan and Mina Harker, make up their only official on-screen married couple, but the pair also acted opposite each other in 2006's A Scanner Darkly and 2018's Destination Wedding. “I would literally do anything, though, with him. Like he is so special,” Ryder said about Reeves.
The actress is reluctant to lean into anything John Wick appearances for the sake of her bones, she says, but is down for anything that doesn't require a stunt person to stand in — like a wedding. It was during the press tour for Destination Wedding that Ryder shared her musings about them Dracula marriage.
“We actually got married in 'Dracula.' No, I swear to god, I think we're married in real life. In that scene, Francis used a real Romanian priest. We shot the master, and he did the whole thing. So, I think we're married,” she told Entertainment Weekly at the time. Helping to jog Reeves' memory, she added: “Don't you remember that? It was on Valentine's Day.” How romantic.
“Oh my gosh,” Reeves responded. “We're married.”
