Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is racing toward a huge box-office opening and is slated to outpace Mufasa: The Lion King as studios continue to bet big on video game adaptations. The threequel stars Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Idris Elba as Knuckles, Colleen O'Shaughnessey as Tails, Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, James Marsden as Tom Wachowski, and Keanu Reeves as Shadow and opens in theaters on Dec. 20.
If you're looking to catch up on the franchise before the new film is released, Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2released in 2020 and 2022, are both available on Hulu and Paramount+.
The Disney+ and Hulu bundle is available starting at $10.99/mo with ads, while Paramount+ is available with Showtime for $12.99/mo or $7.99/mo for the Essential plan. Paramount+ is available with a one-week free trial, while Hulu offers the first month free.
The franchise is based on the hit video game series, which originally debuted on the Sega Genesis. The popularity of the character outlasted the console, and games have since been released for Nintendo, PlayStation, and XBOX consoles, as well as mobile games.
The 2020 film was initially met with intense internet mockery when it was announced, due to Sonic's appearance. The film's animators worked overtime to redesign Sonic's appearance, particularly the character's unnervingly human teeth. In addition to the films, Paramount+ debuted Knuckles in 2024, with Idris Elba reprising his role from the franchise and Adam Pally costarring. The series is streaming exclusively on Paramount+, which is also available as a Prime Video add-on.
