Wicked smashed box office records during its opening weekend, with scores of fans leaving the theater singing “Popular” or holding space for the lyrics to “Defying Gravity.” Although it’ll be a while before the film hits streaming, the soundtrack album is available to stream, and fans can buy physical copies of the CD or Vinyl.
The CD edition of Wicked: The Soundtrack sits atop Amazon’s bestselling list on its CDs & Vinyl charts, ahead of Christmas releases from Michael Buble and Vince Guaraldi Trio’s perennially bestselling A Charlie Brown Christmas LP. The two-LP edition of Wicked: The Soundtrack vinyl is #4 on the bestselling chart.
Given the many, many merch collaborations released ahead of the film, it’s no surprise that Target gave the Wicked soundtrack an exclusive pressing. The Target-exclusive CD and vinyl was released on Friday to coincide with the film.
Wicked: The Soundtrack [Target Exclusive]
The double-LP Target-exclusive edition features a two-tone design, with a pink and green Glinda and Elphaba colorway on each record. Target also released an exclusive CD of the album, featuring a mini poster and pink or green spine on the jewel case.
The soundtrack album’s closer is “Defying Gravity,” performed by Cynthia Erivo featuring Ariana Grande. Erivo’s performance of the closing track in the film was singled out by Rolling Stone’s David Fear, who wrote, “It is not just the song in which Elphaba breaks bad, but the one in which she finally breaks free. And when Erivo nails that moment and rides into Oz’s history books on a broomstick, for a split second you feel like there’s no place you’d rather be than riding alongside her. Not even home.”
Along with Erivo and Grande, the film stars Jonathan Bailey, Michelle Yeoh, Ethan Slater, and Jeff Goldblum. Wicked was directed by Jon M. Chu, known for Crazy Rich Asians, In The Heights, and the Step Up franchise.
