Yesterday at the Vele di Scampia, in Naples, a bridge-gallery on the third floor of the Vela Celeste collapsed. The collapse – the causes of which are still being ascertained – cost the lives of two people, Roberto Abbruzzo and Margherita Della Ragione. But at least 15 people were involved in the fall, with six adults (three women in serious condition) and seven children hospitalized, the latter all in red code (two in serious condition).
Among the many artists who cried over the incident, two rappers who know the situation in Scampia very well, Geolier and Luchè, spoke out.
The young Neapolitan artist posted a photo of an injured woman after the collapse, writing sadly: “We are cinematic but abandoned. Without more tears, this is not possible.”
Luchè instead posted a shot in which two writings appear on the walls of the Vele. On one side an explicit “No to Gomorrah”, followed by the even more direct “Scampia is not a whore. I won't give it to you, bro”. All followed by this thought: «I borrowed this photo from my brother Giuseppe Di Vaio some time ago because the sentence that you read says a lot. Together with many other artists of our land we have shouted the emotions of those who grew up in certain contexts, but often it seems that it is all and only entertainment. We have put a lot of anger into it, and often, I personally, have assumed quite aggressive attitudes, which however if read in the right way were only a consequence of remaining incredulous in the face of so much degradation. Now that there are innocent victims, I ask myself how it is possible to be left like this for all this time». Di Vaio himself, in a carousel on Instagram with various photos taken at the Vele, added: «It takes courage to enter the sails of Scampia. You live on the edge. Everyone knows it».
