Willie Nelson returned to The Late Show With Stephen Colbert for a second performance this week, this time to play “Whiskey River” from his 1973 album, Shotgun Willie, before being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame tonight. Nelson also sat down for an interview with Stephen Colbert in his tour bus, where he discussed life on the road, his immense song catalog, and his forthcoming Rock Hall induction. “I thought they had the wrong number,” Nelson joked when Colbert asked about the accolade. Previously, Nelson stopped by the TV show on November 1 to perform his 1964 track “I Never Cared for You.” Nelson was accompanied by a full band, including his son Micah, for both performances. During his interview with Colbert last night, Nelson chatted about writing songs like “Hello Walls” and “Crazy,” all while Colbert wore a Willie Nelson bandana with pre-attached braided pigtails.
Joining Nelson as fellow inductees at this weekend’s Rock Hall celebrations are Kate Bush, Missy Elliott, Rage Against the Machine, Sheryl Crow, George Michael, and the Spinners. Fans can watch this year’s ceremony via livestream on Disney+. To ring in the big occasion, Nelson also released his new Greatest Hits album today (November 3).
Later this year, CBS will also air a taped version of Nelson’s 90th birthday party, which featured performances from the Chicks, Keith Richards, Sheryl Crow, Chris Stapleton, and Snoop Dogg. The special is set to debut on December 17.
Last year, Nelson released his new album A Beautiful Time, as well as Live at Budokan, a snapshot of his 1984 set at Nippon Budokan in Tokyo. A Beautiful Time ended up winning the Grammy Award for Best Country Album back in February.
