The second trailer for Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning is here. Coming six months after the initial trailer, the latest preview of the eighth (and likely final) film in the action franchise shows Tom Cruise‘s field agent Ethan Hunt hanging off planes, running from explosions, and prepping for what appears to be a momentous mission (of course) to save the country.
Along with the action-packed scenes, various ominous quotes set the tone for the film, which will be released in theaters on May 23. At one juncture, someone surmises, “If we want to bring the world back from the brink, we have to deal with him.” Another government official advises Hunt, “Your team has been betrayed, Ethan. All your secrets, compromised.” And another person forebodes, “Everything you’ve done has come to this.”
The trailer shows off stunts that seem to top the death-defying moves Cruise has become known for. In fact, some of the stunts, including hanging from a soaring airplane, are the ones director Christopher McQuarrie told Empire “will melt your brain.” He added, “There would be a day in Africa — any day in Africa — where Tom would go out and do something that topped anything he had ever done before.”
Meanwhile, Cruise told Empire, “When you stick your face out [of an airplane], going over 120 to 130 miles an hour, you’re not getting oxygen. So I had to train myself how to breathe. There were times I would pass out physically; I was unable to get back into the cockpit.”
Along with Cruise, the film stars Simon Pegg playing Benji Dunn, Ving Rhames playing Luther Strickell, Vanessa Kirby playing Alanna Mitsopolis, Hayley Atwell playing Grace, Esai Morales playing Gabriel, Shea Wigham playing Jasper Briggs, Greg Tarzan Davis playing Degas, and Pom Klementieff playing assassin Paris.
