David Gilmour kicked off his “Luck And Strange” world tour on Friday 27 September at the Circus Maximus in Rome, for the first of six scheduled dates. The set included six songs from the new album, “Luck And Strange,” several appearances by Gilmour's daughter Romany, three songs from the 2015 album “Rattle That Lock” and 12 Pink Floyd classics.
Prior to the tour, Gilmour had made headlines around the world by declaring his “reluctance to revisit Seventies Pink Floyd” and stating: “I think I'll play one or two things from that period, but it seems so long ago… “.
On the opening night he played not only “Wish You Were Here”, but also “Breathe (In The Air)”, “Time, Breathe (Reprise)”, “Fat Old Sun”, “The Great Gig In The Sky” and “Comfortably Numb”. He also performed four songs (“Marooned”, “High Hopes”, “A Great Day For Freedom”, “Coming Back To Life”) from the 1994 album, “The Division Bell”, and one piece (“Sorrow”) from the 1987 LP “A Momentary Lapse Of Reason”.
The show also marked the official debut of his new support group, following a pair of dress rehearsals in Brighton, England. The band includes drummer Adam Betts, guitarist Ben Worsley, keyboardists Rob Gentry and Greg Phillinganes, longtime bassist Guy Pratt, and backing vocalists Louise Marshall, Charlie Webb and Hattie Webb. Romany Gilmour joined her father to perform “The Piper's Call” and a cover of the Montgolfier Brothers' 1999 song, “Between Two Points.”
