U2 have released two previously unreleased songs, but they're not exactly new. They are Picture of You (X+W) And Country Mile. They were recorded during the album sessions How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb whose twentieth anniversary is being celebrated with a re-edition.
The 2004 album will be released on November 22nd in a remastered and expanded version. It will contain what U2 call a “shadow album.” It is titled How to Re-Assemble an Atomic Bomb and contains 10 songs, including the two mentioned, taken from those sessions, as well as remixes and live performances.
«The sessions for How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb “It was a very creative time for the band, we were exploring so many song ideas in the studio,” The Edge says in a press release. “We were inspired to revisit our early musical influences, and it was a time of deep personal introspection for Bono as he was trying to work out – dismantle – the death of the father».
For the reissue, The Edge went “through my personal archive to find unreleased gems, and I hit the nail on the head. We chose ten. They had been left out at the time, but in hindsight we recognize that our initial instincts about whether they could be part of the album were right, we were on the right track.”
