With their second album, “In Flight”, Time Rift attempts to consolidate their presence in the hard rock scene, proposing a work that looks to the past and which aligns itself with that – now large – group of groups with female vocals that offer a vintage sound, anchored to stylistic features that do not go beyond 1980. The most apt comparison, in their case, is with the Spiders, a Swedish group that, like Time Rift, found its sound in the golden period between the Seventies and Eighties, with a garage attitude reminiscent of that of the MC5. Looking for a more well-known name, however, it is impossible to ignore that of the Blues Pills, who won us over just last year with the splendid “Birthday”.
We cannot say the same, however, for this “In Flight”: a collection of solid, well-played songs, but which fails to really add anything significant to a panorama which, instead, has produced works of considerable depth. The group's singer, Domino Monet, joined the band in 2023 and her arrival certainly gave a different cut to the trio's music (previously the vocal parts were handled by guitarist and founder Justin Kaye), but, despite its good performance, the general feeling is that the group is still unable to find a true identity of its own.
It is true that, compared to Blues Pills, we are dealing with a band that is still quite young, which has not yet reached the same maturity, however the path of the two bands appears similar and, while the Swedes had managed to establish themselves as one of the best reality since their debut, giving a personal and charismatic touch to their sound, Time Rift still seem to be a step behind, stuck in a competent interpretation but devoid of real innovation.
Ultimately, “In Flight” is an album that can be listened to with pleasure, but which will struggle to carve out a prominent space for itself in an already rich and evolved scene.
