That a fracture had been created within Jane's Addiction – on one side the singer Perry Farrell, on the other the guitarist Dave Navarro, the bassist Eric Avery and the drummer Stephen Perkins – was evident. That these last three could return to making music together after the group's new dissolution was possible, if not probable. Now there is certainty.
Nearly four months after a fistfight on stage (and backstage) in Boston, Navarro, Avery and Perkins are back doing something together, although we don't know exactly what. The bassist revealed this by posting a video on Instagram in which he plays the bass: «I'm writing some lines on Stephen's drums. I can't wait for you to play on Mr. Navarro. 2025!”.
It's not the first time the musicians have planned something outside of Jane's Addiction. After the group disbanded in the early '90s, Farrell founded Porno for Pyros, while Navarro and Avery started Deconstruction. They would have wanted Perkins with them, who instead went to play in Farrell's band. They then recruited Michael Murphy. Only one titled album was released Deconstruction in 1994, then Navarro joined the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
If Perkins commented on the bassist's video with the phrase “Love that dark swing”, in two different posts Navarro thanked Spin for an article on Deconstruction and announced the return of Deconstruction on streaming platforms. «It was never really promoted and no single was released. It quickly disappeared and went out of print,” writes the guitarist. «It was very experimental, it didn't follow any rules, it didn't have structured songs. Eric sang and played bass, I was on guitar and did some backing vocals, Michael Murphy from Lions and Ghosts was behind the drums. We never did a concert, but the sonic exploration was free and inspired. I think some of the musical magic between me and Eric can definitely be heard in this project. I would say it's more cinematic than traditional song oriented. Maybe that's why it's a difficult record for some.”
