“Get up, work, go home, smoke a joint, repeat”. It is the alienating life that the Typo Clan sing in Wake Upthe track that opens the album So Many Fights, released a week ago. They come from Brescia, their names are Daniel Pasotti and Manuel Bonetti, they mix a bit of everything in their music, from rap to funk to world music. We asked them to tell us about five pieces that influenced them.
1. “Momentary Bliss” Gorillaz feat. slowthai & Slaves
Gorillaz have been a point of reference for us from the beginning, both for musical sharing, and for the style, both in constant evolution. Since its release, the latest album has become the soundtrack of the house Typo and this track is without a doubt one of our favorites.
2. “Ooh La La” Run the Jewels feat. Greg Nice & DJ Premier
In the last 2-3 years we’ve gotten very close to beatmaking, local or international, and RTJ’s prods are really school. This piece, besides being an incredible hit, has a constantly repeating video in our YT playlists.
3. “Me and the Devil” Gil Scott-Heron
Gil Scott-Heron’s entire latest record has been a huge inspiration for the songwriting of our album. Especially ours You Got Soul, released last summer, brings with it clear references. It’s hard to pick one piece in particular, but Me and the Devil it’s the right one to put on a playlist like this.
4. “Morals” Africa Express feat. Moonchild Sanelly, Mahotella Queens, Muzi, Mr Jukes
Disc of experimentation and research but above all of great cultural impact. The works on the album are directed by Damon Albarn, but the sound is by no means Eurocentric or Americancentric, on the contrary it leaves room almost exclusively for African sounds. In short, a political record, even if perhaps not explicitly. We choose morals also because in feat with Moonchild Sanelly, whom we really appreciate.
5. “The Bravest Man in the Universe” Bobby Womack & Damon Albarn
As for Gil Scott-Heron, here we are talking about a huge artist, with a poignant and unmistakable voice. An old school voice lent to a record with a contemporary sound, a truly magical blend. The live with Damon Albarn that we have chosen is another great classic in our listening.
