The group, composed of guitarist Zac Sokolow, bassist Jake Faulkner and drummer and percussionist Nicholas Baker, was born in 2019 in Los Angeles, when the band formed to play five nights a week in the lobby of the historic Roosevelt Hotel on Hollywood Boulevard. Initially tasked with creating a simple background for guests, tourists and passers-by, THE LOM He soon began experimenting with a repertoire that transcended genres, reflecting the musical diversity characteristic of Los Angeles, and soon began performing in front of thousands of people, attracting the attention of the likes of Beck, Vampire Weekend and Zane Lowe.
The trio began by instrumentally reinterpreting the classic soul ballads of the '50s and '60s broadcast by the historic local oldies station, K-EARTH 101. The relaxed sound typical of the area draws inspiration from icons such as Smokey Robinson, Aaron Neville and Brenda and the Tabulations. The band's sound palette then expanded, intertwining with the musical identity of the city, embracing the romanticism of classic Mexican Boleros and Cumbia Sonidera. LA LOM has thus created music that blends all these elements with the guitar twang of Peruvian Chicha and Bakersfield Country.
Zac Sokolow has a musical lineage that spans generations. He began his journey in music performing with his father, a leading figure in the Los Angeles bluegrass scene, whose family emigrated from Buenos Aires in the 1930s. Jake Faulkner, who grew up in an artistic family in Venice, met Zac at 16. Together they honed their talents by sharing the stage with several bands from the Southern California Rockabilly scene, before coming together to form LA LOM. Nicholas Baker has been immersed in Latin music since childhood thanks to his grandmother, from a musical family from Durango, Mexico, who became famous as a DJ on a Spanish radio station in Tucson, Arizona. Nicholas then studied Latin percussion with the renowned bassist and percussionist Roberto Miranda.
