There is a music that does not chase time, but crosses it. THE Perizona Experiment they come back to be heard with “25”a best of that celebrates twenty-five years of sonic explorations outside the boundaries of genre, between psychedelia, stoner, post-rock and kraut derivatives. A journey that starts in 1998 and reaches today, passing through albums, lineup changes and visionary collaborations. In this interview we retrace the history of the Perizona Experiment, the meaning of this new chapter and the prospects of a band that, apparently, is ready to return to the stage.
25, your new album, it's a celebration but also a rereading of your journey: how did you choose the 8 tracks that represent these 25 years of Perizona Experiment?
It's more of a celebration, a birthday… the criterion was to give an idea of the music covered in the 5 albums, including the vocal participations which have always been occasional. Of the songs chosen, some have been slightly modified or partially sectioned for their duration, with editing by Molecola.
Your music has always rejected rigid labels, moving between psychedelia, stoner, post rock and kraut: how important was it, yesterday as today, to maintain this expressive freedom?
We didn't refuse anything, we self-produced the first 3 albums, then, when it happened, we collaborated with Lizard Records and now, with Vina Records, we have also reformed.
The genres you listed concern us precisely because they are territories where expressive freedom grows.
Listening “25” a strong sonic coherence is perceived despite the changes in lineup and eras. there is an “invisible thread” that has always guided the Perizona Experiment?
The thread is the form of musical adaptation to forms of composition of various types… we go from pieces of over 20 minutes, to ballads or songs, from songs of dolphins in the oceans, to reproductions of the dream of a man who sleeps while snoring, from carpets of guitars effected on hypnotic keyboards with film-like overdubs, to poetic reflections on reverse arrangements, etc…
Many songs deal with symbolic, political or visionary themes (mein kampf, politicais, orgon blunt): how important is the message for you compared to the purely sonic experience?
The songs all have a topic, themes, the text hidden on the instrumental music…. initially we played with images behind us, blobs on the topic covered, then for “Mein Kampf” it dealt with the horrors of war, “Politicheis” corruption, and so on.
The album ends with “the lazy fisherman”a very evocative piece with a different atmosphere: why did you choose this piece as the conclusion of the best of?
The song was born on the text by John Mura, an Italian-Canadian poet who performed with the Perizona Experiment. in the early 2000s.
The piece, in an ethno-folk form, I don't know how he managed it, but ultimately it evokes the area where we come from, the Pescara coast and it can be considered a sort of dedication.
There is talk of a possible reform and a live return: what can we expect from Perizona Experiment today, after 25 years of experimentation?
The opportunity arrived with the release of the vinyl collection published by Vina Records, and starting from this month of January 2026 we started performing live again… the experiment continues….
