Yesterday the Russian authorities banned the Elton John Aids Foundation, the organization founded by the musician in 1992 who deals with financing in various countries in the world programs for treatment against HIV. Cause: support to LGBTQ+people.
In a declaration, the prosecutor general office has established that the Foundation is “unwanted organization” in Russia, that is, it will no longer be able to operate in the area. The reason: for the Russian authorities, the Elton John Aids Foundation promotes “non -traditional sexual relationships, western family models and gender reassignment”. According to the Russians, the organization also took part in the campaign to discredit Russia after the invasion of Ukraine and would have had relations with other organizations considered as “foreign agents”.
Note on a margin: in 1979 Elton John was among the first western stars of first greatness to perform in the then Soviet Union. He held eight concerts, four in Moscow and four in the current St. Petersburg, opening the way to other artists, from Billy Joel to Paul McCartney. It is a story told here.
Recently, the Foundation of Elton John has launched a campaign against the cut of funds in USAID designed by the Trump administration, funds that are also used to fight AIDS abroad. According to a research by the Burnet Institute mentioned by Lancetthe cuts could lead to an increase of almost 11 million cases of HIV in the world, with an excess mortality of almost three million individuals. “Decades of progress could be swept away.”
