The number seven has a very strong meaning, not only for numerology but also for a more popular culture, and is often combined with knowledge, the search for truth and perseverance, a skill that, undoubtedly, Veilburners do not lack.
Now on their seventh release, they have given birth to an album made up of seven songs, each of which has a duration of exactly seven minutes and, with total coherence with respect to their musical journey, once again it is a matter that is difficult to decipher: the Americans, in fact, continue to propose a whimsical hybrid of black metal and death metal, managing to produce albums that always sound different from each other.
In the past, excellent records such as “The Obscene Rite” or “A Sire To The Ghouls Of Lunacy” followed in the wake of that type of black metal in which expressive freedom reigns supreme – something comparable to Deathspell Omeg, at least on an attitudinal level – while from “Lurkers In The Capsule Of Skull” the death metal component began to occupy a more important share.
This trend continues with “The Duality Of Decapitation And Wisdom” and, indeed, consolidates around highly esoteric atmospheres, managing to focus like never before on that energy and exuberance which, in some previous episodes, did not seem to be expressed completely. The more acidic part of their music integrates convincingly with the brutal and wild one in a cohesive and flowing work, certainly not easy to enjoy but with a complete meaning. Dissonances, crazy and changing rhythms, disturbing noises and complex riffing are caged in unconventional structures, in an unlikely union between Nachtmystium and Ulcerate, while a voice that is divided between growling and screaming guides us on a journey through the depths of hell .
In “III Visions Of Hex-Shaped Hiss, Behead The Howling Spirit” and “The Duality Of Decapitation And Wisdom Part II” the psychedelic side is particularly emphasised, as well as in the tribal “VII (Voured Ichneumous Icon)”, the most experimental moment overall, while “Shadows Of A Shadow” and “Woe Ye' Who Build These Crosses…Are Those Who Will Serve Us Death” stand out for robust guitars with a thrash. The only slightly blurry passage can be identified in “Tem Ohp Ab In Mysticum”, probably because, in a context based on eccentricity, it is the most direct and linear song.
“The Duality Of Decapitation And Wisdom” is, as one might imagine, different from what preceded it, in what, more than an evolution, seems like an endless search for a peculiar sound and which, this time, allowed the duo from Pennsylvania to achieve an interesting goal. Considering Veilburner's unpredictability, it's hard to think that this could be a stable solution, but the hope is that the two musicians will maintain their current creativity and inspiration for a long time.
