Behind the name Emasculator lies a reality that goes far beyond the simple eccentricity of its moniker: the entire lineup of the new death metal band is in fact all-female, actually composed of veterans of the scene, active in many other bands and led by the important presence of Mallika Sundaramurthy on vocals, who rose to prominence thanks to her excellent work in the now defunct Abnormality.
Once you have overcome the astonishment for the 'pink' nature of the proposal, practically a black sheep within this genre, you can immerse yourself in listening to this EP entitled “The Disfigured And The Divine” following the excellent business cards that each member can show off to their advantage.
The seven tracks presented, moreover, do not make any discounts and show a variety of solutions that has nothing to envy to many other realities of the New Standard Elite house, which publishes this introductory work of the band in CD format: “Ecstasy In Disseverment (Of Self)”, in the opening, violently transports us into the kingdom of Emasculator thanks to killer riffs, tumultuous whirlwinds of the drums and growling vocals of an excellent level, mixed with the urgency and speed that are suited to the most brutal sides of death metal.
The register does not change with “In Resplendent Terror” and “Thesmophoric Rites”, where the technique, the slowdowns and the double pedal flattenings of the masters Suffocation are interpreted to perfection by the band in question, according to an approach that is certainly very scholastic, therefore not very original, but equally capable of providing a few moments of enthusiasm thanks to the overflowing energy of the band.
The rhythm is broken by the oriental suggestions of “The Unassailable”, a brief atmospheric interlude, however rich in tension and malignity, which directly introduces the last three episodes of the disc: “Eradication Of The Asuras” stands out as the best episode of the lot, a lightning demonstration of power that contains some of the best exchanges between guitar and drums and that launches relentlessly into the following “Age Of The Goddess”, a more elaborate song where a cryptic and twisted darkness emerges, close, very close, to the style coined by Terrance Hobbs and his companions over thirty years ago. “Supreme Void Of Acephalous Being” closes the speech with a peremptory character, confirming the absolute competence with which Emasculator relate to their genre of reference.
In short, we are faced with girls in love with extreme death metal and ready to pour their passion into a series of songs that are impeccable in their production, but slightly lacking in terms of originality.
Objectively considering “The Disfigured And The Divine” we are faced with a work by fans for fans, but we expect that already from a first debut album they will be able to make their sound and the writing of their songs distinctive, as well as devastating.
