070 Shake, American rapper and singer, released “Petrichor”, his third studio album, last Friday. Among the many sonic facets that characterize the album, the ninth track stands out, a bold reinterpretation of Tim Buckley's “Song To The Siren”. The cover features the unexpected participation of Courtney Love and Melissa Auf Der Maur, Hole's frontwoman and bassist respectively.
070 Shake takes a more desperate and “gloomcore” approach than the original, with Melissa Auf Der Maur's vocals enriching the piece without ever overpowering it. However, it is Courtney Love who steals the show: her scratchy voice emerges as the ideal instrument to bring Buckley's desolate lyrics to life.
This new version is part of a long tradition of covers of the song, among which stand out that of “It'll End In Tears” (1984) by This Mortal Coil, performed by Elizabeth Fraser, and John's more ethereal and rarefied approach Frusciante (2009). Listen to it below:
