Fanatical: The Catfishing of Tegan and Sara will stream on Hulu next month
For years, fans of Tegan and Sara thought they had a unique online relationship with Tegan. They exchanged personal messages on Facebook and jokes. They felt like friends. Then they realized that it wasn't the case at all.
The trailer for the new documentary Fanatical: The Catfishing of Tegan and Sara — which premieres on Hulu on Oct. 18 — shows how somebody hacked into the personal information of the artists (who are sisters), including their mother's medical history and used it to leverage relationships with their fans around 2011.
“I had become friends with Tegan and it had become a long-term friendship,” one fan says. “At some point, she sent me a shared drive and a password. It felt off, so I reached out to her management of her and I got a text that says, 'She has no idea who you are.' And I said, 'Well, then Tegan has a big problem.'” Eventually, the extent of the grift revealed itself.
In the film, Tegan and Sara discuss how unsafe they felt throughout the ordeal. “We were extremely worried about our fans talking to this person,” one of them (who isn't on camera) says. And in another scene, Tegan (the real one) says, “Fake Tegan systematically destroyed my life.” They were concerned that someone they knew had stolen their information, including passport info, which is seen in the trailer.
Filmmaker Erin Lee Carr (Stormy, I Love You, Now Die, Britney vs Spears) directed the picture. “We kept this story a secret for a long time,” one of the sisters says at the end of the trailer.
