The black flags are ready to return. At least according to what was decided by Greg Ginn, guitarist and the only original member who remained, who through a message entrusted to social media announced a new formation of the band and promised the arrival of new music, the first after twelve years of silence.
Short Recap: after the dissolution of the historical line-up in 1987-the one with Henry Rollins on the voice to be clear-, the Black Flag had risen in 2013 with Ginn and converting Ron Reyes, former singer of the band between 1979 and 1980. They had published What the …quite coldly, to then hunt Reyes again, this time directly from the stage during a concert in Australia, and replace it on the fly by the Skater Mike Vallely. Vallely carried the shack forward until 2019, and then definitively greet the group last January. In the middle, a Copyright cause intended by Ginn against Rollins and some former members, then ended up in nothing.
Now the Black Flag starts from scratch, the post spread on Instagram is clear: “We are turning the page. The black flags enter a new era”. The new members would even be already at work in the studio, together with Ginn, “writing, trying, bringing new energy”. Both new concerts and new music is coming. Always according to what is reported in the post, the new training will see Max Zanely on the voice, David Rodriguez on bass and Bryce Weston on drums. Three practically unknown names, as pointed out also Stereogumwith Zanelly wrapped in total mystery.
Easy to be skeptical. The black flags of the training with Rollins had left their mark between 1981 and 1985, publishing six records that still weigh as boulders in the history of hardcore punk. After the end of the band, Rollins had put on a label and a publishing house, and with the Rollins Band he had continued to play up to the first two thousand.
Now, Rollins has definitively closed with music, while Ginn will try to keep the flag of the Black Flags high. Will it be a real return or just yet another commercial attempt to resurrect the past?
