To introduce us to the dark world of the Thanorenan we do not find a previous discography, given that “Ekstasis of Subterranean Currents” represents the absolute debut of the Polish duo, but we can make some ideas on the content of the disc going to sift through the career of the two members of this new mysterious project.
In fact, all the tools and the compositional part are treated by km, a mysterious and solitary entity that controls every aspect of the valid Ars Magna Umbrae, while the voice of the disc is by E., the founding member of the whole cultums. The experimental spirit of the former, and the rigid solemnity of the latter finds a meeting point in the album we are talking about today, a black metal synthesis of atmospheric suggestions and heavy riffs perfectly orchestrated by the two.
Although he sees the light through I, Voidhanger Records, Italian label dedicated for years to find the best realities on the Avant-Garde and experimental fields, the disc in question planting its roots in the most classic Black Metal tradition, reaffirming this proximity to the origins of the genre with a series of powerful, concrete and evil songs.
The first positive aspect we find is in fact the choice of a deep, pasty sound, focused on guitars and its effective rhythmic progressions, which already “The Descent” capture the attention and present the raw but finished style of the band. Km, however, does not forget his past, and already from the subsequent “with tongues of the underworld” introduces effective brushstrokes, now melodic now more dissonant, which break the massive incede of the song.
In this sense, “Thrice-Hexed” is reported as one of the Higlights of “Ekstasis ..”, kissed by memorable sections where the two souls shown below is excellently mixed by the Thanorean. The song Ritate and engaging Principal, before dissolving in more smoky and oppressive scores, on which E.'s voice has the opportunity to articulate in different registers and vocal styles.
The evocative spirit of this work is then released into the narrow ravines of “Tranquil Trueness of End”, a more ethereal song by the disturbing feeling of impending danger, and definitively explodes in “de profundis”, another black pearl where the musical abstraction of the Poles reaches the highest qualitative levels, without ever losing the orientation and an easily identifiable form.
The bass slice of “to abyss sacrosant” takes care of bringing us back to the ground, another episode full of riffs and blast beats terribly materials, or the old school of “in Reverent Throes” to remind us of the most fundamentalist setting of the work, always ready to thin out in labyrinthine arcane and mysterious evocations (“Bound Beneath and Beyond”).
It is with the title-track that the infernal path of the Thanorean ends, a dark march that condenses the ancient and futuristic stimuli that together constitute the main bone of this incendiary debut.
High recognizes between song and song, listening listening and intelligent and mature songwriting make “Ekstasis of Subterranean Currents” an excellent, suggestive, perfect synthesis of what it means to be inspired by the past to create something fresh and innovative.
If bands like Blut Aus Nord and Akhlys excite you, you can throw yourself into the dark abysses evoked by the Thanoreanan undoubtedly, sure to find you unremonited among the poisonous turns of this infidal creature of darkness.
