Tenacious D is not easily dismissed (and thank goodness for that!). At an event on Tuesday, Jack Black was asked about the band’s future following bandmate Kyle Gass’s Donald Trump joke, which caused the duo to cancel all of their tour dates. Speaking to Variety, Black promised that Tenacious D will “be back”: “We gotta take a break. Everybody needs a break sometimes. And we’ll be back.”
Asked if he had spoken to Gass after canceling the tour, Black said: “Yeah, we’re friends. That hasn’t changed. These things sometimes take time… And we’ll come back when it feels right.”
For those who missed the previous episodes: from the stage of their concert in Sydney on July 14, Kyle Glass said: “I wish there was a Trump next time.” The show took place immediately after the attack on former US President Donald Trump in Pennsylvania. At first, the comment apparently caused laughter among the crowd. But once it reached social media, the situation became complicated, attracting, among others, the attention of Australian federal senator Ralph Babet, who drafted a letter calling for Tenacious D to be “expelled” from the state: “Tenacious D should be immediately removed from the country after wishing Donald Trump dead at their Sydney concert. I strongly condemn the call for political violence that the group has made. Inspiring or wishing for the assassination of a President is disgusting, malicious, evil, and unacceptable in any shape or form. This was not a joke: Gass was deadly serious when he wished Donald Trump dead.” Find the video here.
Black initially said he was “blindsided” by the prank and decided to cancel the band’s remaining tour dates and put “all future creative plans on hold.” But now we know that hiatus is over.
