There's not just Snoop Dogg going crazy from Gallarate to La Scala, Dua Lipa testimonial for NBC in a very fake and snow-covered gallery, Mariah Carey singing “voh-lah-reh” and Usher at the inauguration ceremony. Taylor Swift also makes her voice heard (literally) in a video linked to the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics.
The video is the one you find below. Based on the latest single Opalite (business is business), the pop star narrates the exploits of the so-called Blade Angels, the three skaters who will take to the track for the United States of America today at 6.45pm in the short program of Figure Skating – women's singles, the first of the two phases in which the Olympic title is awarded (there will be a free program on Thursday 19th at 7pm). They are Amber Glenn, Alysa Liu and Isabeau Levito, “three American showgirls on ice” as Swift calls them, paraphrasing the title of her latest album.
«Amber will be the first to tell you how many battles she has fought and that the ones lost are as significant as the ones won», says Swift who is not only the voice, but also the author of the lyrics. «Her superpower now is to accept the challenge and dare the world to test her self-confidence. As for Alysa, she quit skating when she was 16 and then returned on her own terms. Now what drives her is joy. Every jump is a celebration, every performance is proof of the beauty there is in knowing yourself.”
There is also a bit of Italy, or rather of Milan, in the story of Isabeau Levito, who Swift calls the incarnation of destiny. «His mother grew up in Milan, and his grandmother (he says it in Italian, ed) lives exactly 13 minutes from the Olympic track”, explains the pop star and it is not clear whether the 13 minutes are calculated by taking ATM transport or a private jet, but we have a well-founded suspicion that the number is not chosen at random as it is the pop star's lucky charm. In any case, the track he refers to is the Milan Ice Skating Arena, or the Assago Forum. For the record, the athlete's grandmother is called Stella (and calls her granddaughter Stellina), the mother Chiara Garberi-Levito moved to the United States in the 90s.
«When you can skate like you were born to be there, history has a funny way of presenting itself. They are teammates and friends. They call themselves Blade Angels and tomorrow night (today, ed) will be at center stage when the show begins in Milan.”
The only Italian representative in today's women's singles figure skating short program is Lara Naki Gutmann.
