Finley And Nina Zilli The video interview. Together, for the first time to animate a summer with an almost retro flavor for many reasons.
Their song, The wrong onetakes its cue from the sounds that were proper to the Italian period of the Dolce Vita, that melodic pop of 60 years ago that has made great many of our musical culture and which today relives through the mouth and notes of these musicians and singers of high workmanship.
Exclusively to our channels they told us all the vicissitudes that led them to join forces, to find themselves after a long time and share a summer, together, from Underdog (as they themselves defined themselves).
Interview with Finley and Nina Zilli
How are you and how this collaboration was born?
Pedro: “Very well, we come from a 2024 full of music, a forum full and, now, a collab with Nina Zilli who fills us with pride”
Nina Zilli: “Arrival from the maternity period, from four broken ribs but, now, the wrong one has finally come out that I am at 100%. Those of us are not wrong … let's tell in a fun way what makes us pissed off”
Pedro: “We exorcise our defects, our inadequacy must be celebrated in some way and these sounds seemed perfect.”
Did the Finley look for Nina or the opposite?
Pedro: “We built this song in the studio and we took the first step. We wanted to give a different relief and lightness to our music and, once the song was completed, we lacked the suitable voice and we contacted Nina. We threw ourselves in the void, we did not know if Nina already had something to do and fortunately here we are.
We were trying to bring our vision of Pop Punk to adjacent sounds, surfing. We did not start immediately thinking about Nina “
Nina Zilli: “I had to do, yes, but the occasion was the right one and I could not say no. Surfing, at the time, was the most subversive thing ever. Like all the breakdown, they were very alternative”.
When did you meet for the first time?
Pedro: “In person in 2009/2010 to some MTV event, however, a real dialogue was born now”
Nina Zilli: “I confirm, we started knowledge only in the studio and the beautiful thing is that we found ourselves immediately well, in one afternoon we did everything”
When it was the last time they asked you “what job do you do?”
Pedro: “The first time was when we went to Sanremo the first time. As long as it was MTV they didn't understand, Sanremo is another thing. My parents stopped at channel 6, that was on 8. The TV insert smiles and songs is historical”
Nina Zilli: “I never said I was an artist, I say that I write what I sing. I like more 'musical artisan', which builds his things in the bedroom. Then, after a while, 50 thousand came and everything changed from there.
Usually those who answer me 'I am an artist' deserve the question 'eh but what work do you do?'. In the concrete we are artists but art has a thousand facets “
MTV generation
How have things changed from the period of Trl to date?
Nina Zilli: “Mtv is no longer the first one, those who watched these maxi productions have a great lack. Perhaps the video today has lost the power it once had and is a great sin, in my opinion the cinema is complete art and makes the song complete.
In those years the market was opening up to punk pop sounds, we started mixing music more and more. We live in a world where capitalism commands and the ultimate goal of capitalism is profit, so we are a little bogged down in this stuff.
In all eras there are cycles and when you dig down, after a while a stimulus will arrive that will make us return to the top with new flickers and new artists.
We are entering a new era where we are suffering from the transition between analog and digital where pirates win but the pirates, in the future, will no longer win “
Finley: “Beyond the video, MTV allowed you to discover new and different things from the usual, everything that did not pass on the radio went there. Marilyn Manson, the blink and things of this kind we discovered them there.
We had the opportunity to make our music known thanks to that channel, it was all divided into precise niches. Now you have more freedom of choice but do not choose, the algorithm passes things different from those you may discover and from those you listen to.
In that case there was someone who selected for you, today you want to choose or at least have the illusion of being able to choose. At least I need to be directed and guided, the algorithm tries to do it but it hurts it and I think more about video platforms than audio.
At this moment the rankings win, the subversion will be the revolution of the last. We start from Underdog and we want to stay, it is the expectations that one self -deceased everything to collapse. When the projects are built in a healthy way, people arrive and that is the litmus test and not the rankings “
You know the radio well. Do you prefer streaming?
Finley: “I find both cool, objectively there are more cool radio containers than others but as a user you must choose. As on MTV, you found what he did for you and then you were going to look for something similar.
Both radio and streaming are experienced with passivity. It is one thing to listen to an account is to live what you listen to. “
Nina Zilli: “For me wherever the music can go is fine. The beautiful thing about technology is to use it in a right and intelligent way, we must be patient and there are many people who are trying to clean up the web.”
