Steven Wilsonworld-renowned producer, remixer, songwriter and composer, has announced details of his eighth studio album, The Overviewwhich will be released via Fiction Records on March 14, 2025.
The forty-two minute album is Steven's boldest to date. AND composed of only two songs: Objects Outlive Us and The Overvieweach inspired by the “panoramic effect” experienced by astronauts looking at the Earth from space.
The Overview sees Steven Wilson's return to expansive music and progressivea genre he helped redefine with both his solo and Porcupine Tree records. The two extremely ambitious pieces are each made up of distinctive musical sections that flow from one to the other, sounding like single, continuous pieces. The music progressive Wilson's 21st Century Updates Classic Musical Palette”prog” to incorporate everything from glittering electronica to post-rock and beyond, transporting the genre right into the beating heart of today's musical landscape.
From The OverviewWilson says: “It is a 42-minute journey based on the so-called 'panoramic effect,' in which astronauts viewing the Earth from space undergo a transformative cognitive change, often experiencing an overwhelming appreciation and perception of beauty and a greater sense of connection with other people and with the Earth as a whole. However, not all experiences are positive; some see the Earth truly for what it is, insignificant and lost in the vastness of space, and the human race as a struggling species. As a reflection of this, the album features images and stories of life on Earth, both good and bad.”.
Although initially a solo recording, the definitive version of The Overview features studio help from longtime collaborators Craig Blundell (drums), Adam Holzman (keyboards) and Randy McStine (guitars), as well as a series of lyrics by XTC's Andy Partridge that help shape the story of Objects Outlive Us.
The album has a decidedly singular sound and vision, drawing on different periods of Wilson's thirty-plus year career. There are nods to the classics Porcupine Treebut also the narration of the world of The Raven That Refused To Singthe forward-thinking electronics of The Future Bites and spatial audio vision of The Harmony Codex of 2023. Consistent with Wilson's reputation as a quintessential modern producer, the album is also a true audiophile experience, and to that end, the spatial/Atmos audio releases of The Overview they will be available physically and digitally.
The vinyl versions were specifically mastered at half speed by Miles Showell at Abbey Road.
The album is accompanied by a film made by Miles Skarin, regular collaborator of Steven Wilson. The film and album will premiere at London's iconic BFI IMAX cinema on Tuesday 25 February.
The film will also be screened in Dolby Atmos in Italy, for a special event on March 5th from 7 pm at the historic Barberini cinema in Rome. A single preview appointment in the presence of Steven Wilson with live Q&A.
