One week before Coachella, earlier this spring, the team behind New York City-based jewelry maker Catbird started working on a special last-minute custom project. The result: a set of yellow gold lapel pins for boygenius — a.k.a., the supergroup featuring Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus.
After donning the custom pieces on the road, the pins, which are inspired by the members’ own tooth tattoos, now serve as the inspiration behind the band’s newest collaboration with Catbird. The collection is appropriately dubbed the “Bite the Hand” collection, a nod to their song of the same name.
“The Coachella teeth were big and bold, to flash in the stage lights and the desert sun,” says Leigh Plessner, creative director at Catbird. “The collection has the same hand-carved feeling, but is suited for everyday wear.”
Ranging in price from $74 to $298, the boygenius x Catbird collab features three new pieces, including a charm, an earring stud, and a lapel pin. The Bite the Hand charm comes in both 14k recycled yellow gold and silver, and retail for $248 and $98, respectively.
Catbird also produced a stud in yellow gold for $168, and a silver stud, available for $74. Finally, fans can also pick up a lapel pin of their own in 14k recycled yellow gold for $298 on Catbird’s website and boygenius’ shop.
“[The collection is] a nod to friendship and fizzy, restless creativity,” Plessner says. “We think of these as friendship pieces — it’s such a joy to see how connected the boys are.”
This isn’t the first time that Catbird has teamed up with members of the supergroup. Last year, Bridgers dropped her own line of charms inspired by some of her past songs.
“I exclusively wear Catbird and have for years, because nobody makes jewelry small enough for my taste except for them,” Bridgers told Vogue in an interview after dropping her previous Catbird collab. “Since my first tour I’ve been wearing this stuff, like the safety pin earring, and the tiniest, tiniest studs. An ex got me a little charm necklace that I wear all the time and people are always giving me skeleton stuff. It’s amazing — it’s like having my own wedding registry.”
Fans can now buy the complete boygenius x Catbird collection online — while supplies last. Catbird’s Giving Fund will also donate $20,000 to the National Center for Transgender Equality as part of the new line.
Catbird hasn’t revealed if more pieces are around the corner, but says the teeth weren’t the only motif floated around for the collab.
“We played with threes and trios quite a bit,” Plessner says of the Catbird collection. “There were eyes and cups and interlocking mice. I might have to keep the rest secret, because you never know what the future holds.”
The new boygenius x Catbird collaboration follows a busy year for the supergroup. The band recently rocked Studio 8H as the musical guests on Saturday Night Live, playing “Not Strong Enough” and “Satanist” from their album, The Record. The band also appeared as Troye Sivan in a sketch with host Timothée Chalamet.
The group also received several Grammy nominations, including nods for Album of the Year, Best Alternative Music Album, Record of the Year, Best Rock Song, Best Engineered Album (Non-Classical), and Best Alternative Music Performance. In September, the band released the follow-up EP to their studio project, titled The Rest.
