Jimmy Kimmel surprised Selena Gomez with a heartfelt engagement present on last night's episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live. At the end of a lengthy conversation about Gomez's work in Emilia Pérez and her experience at the Golden Globes on Sunday, Kimmel announced that he had a gift for her and fiancé Benny Blanco.
“It's not a traditional and it's not necessarily a practical gift, but I think you and Benny are really going to enjoy it,” Kimmel said before placing a Daddy Saddle on his desk. “You can ride around on Benny in a very wholesome way. I don't want you to think that anything is being suggested here that isn't.” He quipped, “That may have been a regift.”
Gomez's recent engagement to Blanco came up several times during the interview, including a discussion about the Golden Globes, where she was nominated for both Emilia Pérez and Hulu series Only Murders in the Building.
Kimmel asked Gomez how she handled being nominated twice and having each cast at a separate table. “You kind of have to pick,” he said. “No,” she replied. “I went to both. There's photographic evidence… I loved being with my Only Murders cast and then celebrating Emily.”
She shared that her Murders co-star Martin Short tried to steal her ring at one point during the ceremony. Kimmel happened to have a video of that exact incident. “I wasn't sure what he was doing,” Gomez replied. “That's why I look confused.” Kimmel quipped that maybe the actor was appreciating it. “He wanted to know what was going on,” Gomez said, miming that he might have had a few drinks.
Gomez noted that Short may not have been thrilled that Blanco didn't call him to ask for permission before proposing to her. “He just gave us a little bit of, you know, jokes here and there,” she said. “I'm so lucky to be with Steve [Martin] and Marty every day. Steve made sure he sent my assistant an email so my assistant could tell me congratulations. That's how he communicates.”
“Is it possible that Steve thinks he's reaching out to you?” Kimmel asked. “Because sometimes in the context it can become confusing.” “Correct,” Gomez responded. “But he always tries to be polite and it's very kind. But it's okay to send a little text.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Gomez talked about spending the holidays with her and Blanco's families in New York and her Christmas traditions, as well as the success of Emilia Pérez. She noted that the Netflix film, which won Best Picture, Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globes, is “very hard to explain.”
“I think you should experience it because when you throw in 'musical,' 'cartel,' and 'drama' and 'comedy,' it can be a bit confusing,” she acknowledged, adding that she had “never actually performed in this way.”
The interview concluded with Gomez admitting that she is a “very paranoid” person. “I just love being able to be myself and any of the outside stuff sometimes can be overwhelming,” she told Kimmel.
Gomez and Blanco worked together on Gomez's 2015 hit song “Same Old Love” and 2019's “I Can't Get Enough,” before confirming their relationship in December 2023. She shared the engagement news on Instagram last month with a photo of the ring and the caption “forever begins now..”
