Two-part Jerry Springer: Fights, Camera, Action, about “the most vile and grotesque freak show that’s ever been on television,” arrives on January 7
The Jerry Springer Show, one of the most controversial programs in television history, will come under the scrutiny of a Netflix docuseries next month.
On Wednesday, the streaming service shared the new trailer for Jerry Springer: Fights, Camera, Action, which goes behind the scenes of the “cultural icon,” from Springer’s days as a mild-mannered Cincinnati mayor to hosting “the most vile and grotesque freak show that’s ever been on television.”
While The Jerry Springer Show became an Oprah-toppling daytime phenomenon, its outrageous parade of sleaze and brawls left a trail of permanently ruined lives in its wake.
“This jaw-dropping, premium two-part series will tell the story of The Jerry Springer Show as it’s never been told before,” Netflix said of the docuseries in a synopsis.
“Packed with extraordinary first-hand testimony and revelations from show insiders, the series explores how this daytime talk show became one of the biggest and most outrageous TV hits of the nineties. But behind the entertaining facade lay some darker truths. As we hear from the producers and ex-guests of The Jerry Springer Show, a murkier picture begins to emerge of the destruction it caused, raising renewed questions about who was responsible, and how far things should go in the name of entertainment.”
Springer, “the patron saint of American dysfunction,” died in April 2023 at the age of 79. Perhaps because of the host’s divisive legacy, Springer was subsequently snubbed from the 2023 Emmy Awards’ In Memoriam segment.
Jerry Springer: Fights, Camera, Action arrives on Netflix on January 7.
