Sanremo Giovani 2024, the choices of the editorial staff
ORIANA MEO
Lately I've been appreciating the more traditional way of singing, so to speak, those who “understand what they're saying”.
That urban way of expressing oneself with poorly articulated words or singing in italics made me tired. I don't like guessing at words, I prefer to understand them. It may seem trivial, but it isn't because if I don't understand, I can at most imagine, certainly not judge.
After listening to the 24 songs of Sanremo Youth my choice fell on (in alphabetical order):
- OrioN – Diamonds in the mud (song that is easy to listen to)
- Sea John – If I were happy (heartbreaking enough)
- Selmi – Maybe forever (a certain originality, while remaining understandable)
FABIO GATTONE
- Alex Wyse – Rockstar
The piece is in the singer's style, in line with previous songs. This is not a bad thing at all; rather, it underlines and affirms Alex's identity. Listening to Rockstar makes you feel a sense of nostalgia, which is very pleasant. - Sea John – If I were happy
It is an intense and introspective ballad, focused on the search for oneself and happiness. The singer has an interesting voice, which he shows off fully when interpreting the song, using it to create – at times – a sensation of suffering and yearning. - Tancredi – Standing ovation
The singer has accustomed us to particular songs. Also in this case he offers an original and courageous song, for its provocative images and irony. The piece has a catchy rhythm; and the refrain, with its melody, remains in your head.
ALESSANDRO GENOVESE
Listening to the 24 finalists of Sanremo Youth I was struck by seven young singers who, through their interpretation, manage to enhance songs with intense and “complicated” lyrics.
I think the three that are going to Sanremo 2025 they will be:
Nicol – Like the sea
A song that struck me from the first listen for its expressive simplicity and strong meaning:
“And men who have grown up and no longer dream of anything
In this world that no longer looks anyone in the face
And I find my heart in my mouth and my back against the wall
Who am I?”
(…)
“They are boats in this life
That comes and goes like the sea
It can't rain forever
But it can rain for weeks
They don't teach it as children
Such a small silence
It can swallow like sea”
The interpretation of Nicol she is very heartfelt and determined, capable of highlighting the text she wrote.
Selmi – Maybe forever
A cry for the desire to love and be loved! The interpretation of Selmi it is simply perfect that cannot go unnoticed.
“For you, for you
I would go and cover the sun with the moon
I would look at the horizon even if it's scary
It's scary, it's scary, it's scary
For you
With my eyes closed I would go back again
On the highway driving at 200 mph
It's scary, it's scary
Maybe forever
Or maybe never”
Mew – Oh My God
Modern sound that accompanies the original interpretation of Mew which stands out for its innovative style.
Also worth a mention for me:
Dea Culpa – Naked
Sidy – Every time
Sea John – If I were happy
September – Vertebrae
ANNA IDA CORTESE
Angelica Bove – “Our melancholy”: Angelica pushes on an up-tempo beat while telling a slightly disillusioned love story. There are many images in the text, like the metro and the canals, which makes you experience that urban nostalgia. A bit' Annalisa who sings with i Baustelle. Beautiful, beautiful.
September – “Vertebrae”: This piece is really a punch straight to the heart. September talks about those relationships that make you feel everything and nothing, with a voice that draws you into its emotions. Super intense.
Vale LP and Lil Jolie – “You tell me when you're ready to make love”: Worth LP And Lil Jolie they bring us a super fresh and direct sound, talking about love and desire in a real way. It's the piece you would listen to on loop for that rhythm that wins you over. Their voices together are beautiful and a female couple is interesting, we haven't seen them for a long time.
ALBERTO MURARO
I listened to all the pieces of Sanremo Young 2024 in the background while I was busy with other projects and I decided to select the three pieces that most of all made me think “let's take a break and find out who the artist who sings it is and what this very particular song is called” .
Angelica Bove – Our melancholy: I like this slightly retro flavor (and the black and white video helps to create greater fascination towards the piece) and I was intrigued by this à la mood Levant of the beginnings. Interesting artist who also seems feisty to me at the right point. I can see it very well on the Ariston stage.
Angie – Scorpio: I'm an R&B fan, grew up on the oldies that were once still played on MTV. I really appreciated this sound which reminds me a bit of my adolescence, it's something that hasn't been heard in Italy for years. And it's very catchy.
Bosnia – I come from the South: very particular song, perhaps the strangest (but in a positive sense) of all the others. The electronic sound he chose is really very original and risky, and the lyrics aren't bad either. I would like him to have a chance to make himself known.
ADRIAN CAPORELLA
TANCREDI
Upon first listening, it immediately stuck in my head and it's one of the very few (if not the only one) that didn't bore me after numerous listens. Fresh song, not typically Sanremo but right and which stands out among the others. One word: brave. Plus, with this song, I think Tancredi has finally come into focus.
SEPTEMBER
This guy is talented and I highlight it from his first audition to X Factor. My mix of Italian and Neapolitan, although present in all his songs, never appears forced and is intelligently dosed, also and above all in “Vertebrae“. It is an emotionally intense song, very heartfelt by the young singer-songwriter who I hope will be able to make this leap forward in his career that he so deserves.
BOSNIA
The real banger of the edition. “I'm from the South” is a real manifesto of the life of a large part of people from the South. Direct, without filters and dressed in an electropop sound that gives him just the right amount of lightheartedness and melancholy that contrasts the harsh truth of his words. He deserves to make himself known and bring his stylistic signature to that stage.
LORENZA FERRARO
Alex Wyse he leaves his comfort zone and returns with a song that, from listening to listening, convinces more and more, above all thanks to both an emotional and musical crescendo and a truly impeccable interpretation.
Mew opens the doors of dark-pop in Italy and with “Oh My God” hits the mark. Expertly constructed, the song contains all the musical universes of the young artist and highlights her different vocal nuances, which make it one of the most interesting proposals of recent years. Mesmerizing.
Masterful interpretation for a piece as direct as it is emotionally complex. September he sings about being exposed, vulnerable, but how much pain is behind it… Andrea tells it without beating around the bush too much, with images that are sometimes strong, but very effective. Delicacy and Depth.
MASSIMILIANO LONGO
The first song I choose, the one I managed to hum straight away, is that of SELMI. The singer-songwriter presents himself with a heartbreaking ballad with a chorus made to win. Of course the chorus reminds me of great classics of Italian music, and this helps (I feel like singing along to it “Without youeeeee, I would die… without you, I would burn… of Claudio Baglionifor example) but in any case the song is constructed and written very well and Selmi he is also an excellent performer.
I've been keeping an eye on him for a while and can confirm that September he is certainly among the most interesting emerging artists on the current Italian scene. His being modern and direct, in his writing and in his aesthetics, while not aping rappers and trappers, makes him an artist balanced between pop and urban with a clear personality. The writing is always centered with striking sentences and in “Vertebrae” there are several. Ironically, what perhaps convinces me the least about him today is the artistic production of the songs which is not as powerful as the artist.
I'm closing with a woman, but on merits, not because of gender quotas. I was torn between Angelica Ox And Mew but in the end it was the latter that struck me the most.
Angelica I feel it's slightly distorted. The attempt to modernize it served to bring it for me a world too close to that of Clara which already, at least in my opinion, is the distorted copy of other Italian female musical worlds.
Mew has the most centered, modern and with a touch of production Billie Eilish. The piece hammers into the head and stays. She can do even better but in the meantime the girl has a personality, even a visual one, and her own internal world made of chiaroscuro, beautiful and at the same time frightening, which are a very important resource for an artist.
In conclusion for the editorial staff of All Music Italy the song that received the most preferences is “Vertebrae” Of September (4).
Three preferences each for Selmi And Mew while they are two Bosnia, Alex Wyse, Angelica Ox, Tancredi, Sea John.
A preference for Angie, Orion, Nicol and the couple Vale Lp & Lil Jolie.
