Sandness come with “Vertigo” to their fifth full-length, which follows three years “Play Your Part”. The disc was made somewhat differently by the previous ones, because the guitarist/singer Robby moved to Germany, so the three members of the band, who used to try the pieces together, for the first time they necessarily had to work at a distance.
Beyond this, we remember how the band has always distinguished itself for a somewhat varied style, open to different influences, from punk to metal, from classic rock to hard rock, from pop to Melodic rock. In this work, on the other hand, the sound appears decidedly more homogeneous and comes from the same band described, in our opinion somewhat effective, like a mix of hard rock and power pop: the songs tend to be certainly very direct, linear and engaging, with very very Catchy melodic refrains.
In some songs such as “The Match” or “From Zero to Hero”, some pop/punk vein or on “Back for More” Alessandro Del Vecchio (who dealt with producing the album) with his inserts of Hammond and Piano, confers a certain seventyian touch, but in general “vertigo” is precisely a rather homogeneous disc in style, which appears to us previous, while maintaining a good dose of irony.
Songs like “Draw the Line”, the aforementioned “Back for More”, “Not your Dog”, “Nevending Road” or “Train of Time”, just to name some, are immediately very captivating from the very first listening, a concentrate of enthralling energy, with texts that tell soul states or speak of the beauty of life, sometimes seasoned with a pinch of nostalgia.
In short, in a certain way “vertigo” was born with the premise of some significant changes for the band, but the results show how this trio managed to find the right formula to go on with their music, as always fueled by a genuine and palpable passion.
