Robert De Niro navigates a sinister web of competing political and industrial forces in the new teaser for Zero Day, the upcoming limited series premiering Feb. 20, 2025, on Netflix.
De Niro stars as George Mullen, a respected former U.S. President, who’s brought back into the federal government for one more job — investigating a catastrophic cyber attack that killed thousands and wrought chaos across the country. As head of the so-called Zero Day Commission, Mullen is tasked with finding the perpetrators before they carry out a second attack, all while contending with a constant stream of disinformation, dark personal secrets, and competing interests in tech, finance, and politics.
Near the end of the trailer, the current president, Evelyn Mitchell, played by Angella Bassett, says ominously: “People believe what they need to believe. The truth is the truth — but it’s not always the most important thing.”
De Niro and Bassett lead a stacked cast for Zero Day, which also includes Jesse Plemmons as Mullen’s former aide-turned-fixer, Roger Carlson, and Lizzy Caplan as Alexandra Mullen — daughter of the former president, now a congressional representative trying to chart her own political future. Joan Allen will play Mullen’s wife, Sheila, who’s been nominated to be a federal judge; Connie Britton will play Valerie Whitesell, Mullen’s former chief of staff; and Matthew Modine will play Richard Dreyer, the current speaker of the house.
Other key cast members for Zero Day are Bill Camp, Dan Stevens, McKinley Belcher III, Gaby Hoffman, Clark Gregg, and Mark Ivanir. The show was created by Eric Newman and Noah Oppenheim, while De Niro was also closely involved as a producer.
“[De Niro] very much became our partner in this process — very hands-on, very involved, read everything at every stage, and it’s been an incredible honor and privilege,” Newman told Netflix’s Tudum. “You can count on one hand the actors and actresses in history who bring this level of gravitas, pedigree, and talent to their work.”
