With “Club Squirting Blood”, Repuked return to the scene with a record that once again has its roots in the most visceral, irreverent and deliberately vulgar death metal, faithful to tradition, but with a now well-defined personality. After the underground success of “Dawn of Reintoxication” in 2020, the Swedish band raises the stakes, challenging conventions with a work that once again winks at the more classic Autopsy matrix, as well as death'n'roll, packaging songs with a raw and provocative flavor, but which, beneath the apparent surface of excess, hide an interesting structural care.
The album opens with the direct and provocative “Stiff Dick in a Stiff”, a title that alone is enough to outline the general tone of the album. Repuked's offensive attitude is reflected in the lyrics and sound approach, with clear references to “Mental Funeral” and “Wolverine Blues”. Yet, one cannot dismiss “Club Squirting Blood” as a simple provocation from a group that simply throws it around: the riffs are often elaborate and well studied, ranging from slow and creeping tempos to explosions of pure hardcore-like aggression, to arrive at a particular attention to the melody, which gives the pieces an immediate recognizability and a longevity that goes beyond appearances. Far from being a band that focuses only on excess – although titles such as “Stiff Dick in a Stiff” or “Into the Anal Abyss” are clear signals of an approach that in certain respects eschews any intellectual pretension or sophistication – Repuked they therefore know how to write pieces that remain imprinted, with inspired riffs, sudden changes in tempo and melodic openings which, despite their brevity, break the brutality of the songs with a touch of pseudo-sophistication.
The rough and cavernous voice of bassist/singer Rob the Slob is then perfectly in line with the decadent and putrescent atmosphere of the album, alternating screams and grotesque growls, enriching the musicality with a theatrical component that amplifies the typical sense of disgust and irony of the band, bringing everything to the same convincing levels as “Dawn of Reintoxication”.
Of course, if Autopsy is enough for you and advances, then a group like Repuked will never be able to make you jump from your seat, but for everyone else this is a record to listen to carefully, as within it there is more 'concept' than than one might initially think. Hiding behind a wall of vulgarity and ignorance, the Swedes know how to write songs that have both riffs and nuances capable of making them long-lasting, for an album that demonstrates how behind certain provocations there is a worthy writing ability and attention to detail of this name.
