Ghali has launched an appeal so that the referendum for citizenship is voted, one of the five scheduled for Sunday 8 and Monday 9 June. The goal is to reduce the necessary years from ten to five to be able to ask for Italian citizenship. Even if the yes win, the referendum will not be valid if it does not go to vote for more than half of the entitled people.
“On 8 and 9 June the Italians and the Italians are called to vote,” writes Ghali. «This referendum is not one thing to ignore. There is talk of rights, work, citizenship and what it really means to be part of a country. I was born here and I have always lived in Italy, but I have obtained citizenship only at the age of 18. My mother also became the Italian town only when I became, and this has complicated many things for both. There are those who are born here, live here for years, work, pay taxes, grow children, speak Italian, feel Italian in all respects but is not recognized as a citizen and with a “yes” we ask that 5 years of life here, not 10, to be part of this country “.
“Citizenship” continues Ghali “cannot be just a document. It is a matter of respect for the time we have to live there, and of dignity. On 8 and 9 June we vote, and if at least 50% of the voters do it, all this is worth nothing. The referendum falls. It is not enough to agree: it is necessary to be there. While we wait for the injustices to cease in other parts of the world, let's try to build change together ».
