Spotify is preparing to increase the prices of subscriptions in Europe. As reported by the Financial Times, the musical streaming platform intends to introduce an increase of about 1 euro on individual European and Latin American subscriptions starting from June. In Italy, this would translate into a passage from 10.99 to 11.99 euros per month for the Premium individual plan, while the prices of Premium Duo (14.99 euros) and Premium Family (17.99 euros) would remain unchanged.
Subscriptions in the United States, on the other hand, will not undergo changes.
The move, according to the IFPI category association, arrives at a time when the decade of rapid expansion of the music sector begins to slow down, with a growth of global revenues that halved last year. Large record companies are promoting “streaming 2.0”, the next phase of music streaming, which would include premium versions more expensive than their services.
According to different sources, always reveals FT, streaming platforms, including Spotify, are evaluating the possibility of charged an additional cost for early access to music, as the music industry tries to monetize the most passionate fans of the most loved artists, as well as the possibility of offering early access to concert tickets to those who pay for the super-premium level.
At the basis of the decision there would be the pressures of the musical industry, which for some time urges Spotify to adapt the cost of its services upwards.
The news comes a short distance from the announcement of increases already communicated to users in the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg: as reported by Rockol, starting from the end of April, the individual subscriptions, Student, Duo and Family in the Benelux area will undergo increases between 1 and 2 dollars per month, depending on the country.
Apple, Amazon and YouTube are also preparing premium versions of their music streaming services.
