It looks like the secret is out on who Olivia Rodrigo‘s 2021 breakout hit “drivers license” is about.
During a promotion for their upcoming appearance on Saturday Night Live, Rodrigo and Adam Driver were joined by cast member Heidi Gardner on stage. After the actor introduced himself and the singer-songwriter, Gardner noted the “awkward” pairing.
“Okay, this is awkward,” Heidi Gardner quipped, adding, “Olivia Rodrigo and the guy she wrote a song about.” After Driver inquired which song she’s referring to, Gardner slipped, “‘drivers license.’ Adam Driver.”
The Grammy award winner confirms the revelations, saying, “It’s a hundred percent about you.”
The following promos include another, potentially more awkward “drivers license” reference, plus a skit on who the real teen heartthrob is for this weekend’s show.
SNL will be wrapping 2023 with Rodrigo, Noah Kahan, and Billie Eilish as the final musical guests of the year. The episodes will be hosted by Driver, Emma Stone, and Kate McKinnon, respectively, kicking things off on Dec. 9.
The upcoming episode will mark Driver’s fourth time hosting, having last led the show in January 2020. For Rodrigo, it’s been two years since she made her debut as musical guest, performing “drivers license” and “good 4 u” from Sour in 2021. This year, the singer released her second album Guts to critical acclaim, and is up for six awards at the 2024 Grammys.
The singer was recently named Storyteller of the Year at the Variety Hitmakers brunch. St. Vincent presented the award, and called Rodrigo a “precious baby angel muffin, but if a precious baby angel muffin were also tough as nails and cool as hell.”
