Olivia Munn would rather Jeff Bezos not send his fiancée Lauren Sanchez and her celebrity friends to outer space. On Thursday, the actress appeared on Today with Jenna and Friends and questioned the decision-making behind sending the all-female crew on the Blue Origin mission.
“What are they doing? Why? I mean, like, I’m just saying this … I know this is probably not the cool thing to say, but there are so many other things that are important in the world right now,” Munn said, before adding, “What are you guys gonna do up in space? What are you doing up there?”
Munn seemed to find issues with the group — which includes Gayle King, Katy Perry, and scientist Amanda Nguyen — doing publicity surrounding the trip, given the political and economic climate the space travel comes at. “I know this is probably obnoxious, but like, it’s so much money to go to space, and there’s a lot of people who can’t even afford eggs,” Munn said.
“What’s the point? Is it historic that you guys are going on a ride? I think it’s a bit gluttonous,” she added. “Space exploration was to further our knowledge and to help mankind. What are they gonna do up there that has made it better for us down here?”
Jenna Bush Hager explained that the trip would last 11 minutes, so Munn compared the trip to their “own” version of Disneyland’s Space Mountain rollercoaster. “This is a lot of resources being spent,” she said.
The crew will also include aerospace engineer Aisha Bowe, Nguyen, and filmmaker Kerianne Flynn. Blue Origin reports that this is the first all-female flight crew since Valentina Tereshkova’s solo spaceflight in 1963.
“She is honored to lead a team of explorers on a mission that will challenge their perspectives of Earth, empower them to share their own stories, and create lasting impact that will inspire generations to come,” Blue Origin wrote on their site of Sanchez.
