“Gi-hun abandons his US plans after a mysterious call and embarks on a chase with a motive,” streaming service says of hit series’ second season
Netflix shared the first look at Squid Game’s much-anticipated second season as part of a montage highlighting the streaming service’s 2024 releases.
The brief clip at the end of the “Next on Netflix” previews picks up where Season One left off: With Lee Jung-jae’s Gi-hun — the survivor of the Squid Game — en route to America to track down the originators of the deadly competition. However, he receives a phone call at the airport that makes him change his plans.
“Gi-hun abandons his US plans after a mysterious call and embarks on a chase with a motive,” Netflix said of the upcoming season.
“The new season will also welcome other beloved characters back, like Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) and Recruiter (Gong Yoo). Adding to the intrigue, a new character played by Park Gyu-young makes her debut, sparking curiosity about the new character.”
Netflix didn’t reveal the exact release date for the upcoming season, only that it would arrive this year.
Squid Game was a hit series across the world when it premiered in 2021. It earned 14 Emmy nominations and six wins, along with a nod for Best Drama Series and a Best Actor win for Jung-jae.
In June 2022, the show’s creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, announced in a letter to fans that the global popularity of the South Korean show paved the way for Season Two.
“It took 12 years to bring the first season of Squid Game to life last year. But it took 12 days for Squid Game to become the most popular Netflix series ever,” Dong-hyuk wrote. “And now, Gi-hun returns,” he continued, teasing the next season. “The Front Man returns. Season 2 is coming. The man in the suit with Ddakji might be back. You’ll also be introduced to Young-hee’s boyfriend, Cheol-su.”
