Ahead of Major League Soccer kicking off on Feb. 21, Adidas and the League unveiled new jerseys for all 30 clubs. There are some striking kits, from the New England Revolution’s retro red-and-blue jersey to LAFC’s Art Deco-inspired design. But among the most exciting releases for music fans are San Jose’s nod to Bay Area icons Grateful Dead, and St. Louis’ tribute to Tina Turner.
While there’s no shortage of Grateful Dead merch and collaborations, the San Jose Earthquakes’ nod to the iconic jam band feels like an organic fit, given the Dead’s origin in nearby Palo Alto. The jersey features a swirling blue-and-purple tie-dye pattern (naturally), with the Stealie logo emblazoned on the hem. The back of the jersey also features the Grateful Dead‘s wordmark logo. The team called it a celebration of “the enduring connection between music, culture, and community.”
As for St. Louis City SC, the jersey features a draping gold design inspired by her stage outfits, with a patch on the hem featuring the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s face and her “Tina” signature below. Like the Quakes’ Grateful Dead jersey, the Tina Turner jersey features her signature on the back of the neck.
The jersey isn’t the only tribute to the legendary singer that the club has in store — St. Louis’ Powell Hall will host Eternal: A Tribute to Tina Turner on Feb. 15. Grammy-winning rocker Brittany Howard, known as the frontwoman of Alabama Shakes and for her psychedelic solo work, will lead the show. While Turner was born in Tennessee, she cut her teeth in the St. Louis club scene alongside Ike Turner.
As for the on-the-pitch action, both teams will have home games when Major League Soccer returns, with St. Louis hosting Charlotte on Feb. 21 and San Jose hosting Atlanta on Feb. 28. The games will stream on Apple TV. You can see the San Jose and St. Louis City jerseys below, or shop all of them on the MLS Store site.
