Maybe Madison Beer isn't the most mainstream name you might hear, especially in this country. The girl still doesn't have the numbers of some of her pop colleagues, and it's also much less likely that you'll hear her on the radio. But we are in the age of streaming, who cares about radio. And in fact she is in all respects what we could define as a slowburner, one of those who has sharpened her sound over the years (here to read her story).
From when she was Justin Bieber's favorite singer to virality on YouTube, passing through some bad choices typical of those who are very young and don't yet know exactly what they want, up to Silence Between Songsa 2023 album that marked a real turning point, in terms of sound and lyrics. From there a succession of ethereal pop songs alternating with sexy club pieces with a great common thread that binds. A sort of nostalgic streak that makes her the perfect uptown neighbor but also the girl who loves four-way cash and aliens. And that made Lana Del Rey love her.
And so after songs like Yes Baby And 15 minutesand above all after seeing her wear a pair of large wings for the Victoria's Scecret fashion show, now it's time to Lockheartthe new album that comes out on January 16th. We spoke to her briefly on the phone to ask her about the project.
“I'm too obsessed with this album,” the pink angel tells us. «As soon as I finished the tour I immediately got to work. I would call it a rollercoaster, with fast moments and more thoughtful things. It's funny, sexy, emotional. Those who love my songs will love it, at the same time I hope you can hear an evolution.”
«It's different from Silence Between Songs but I would say that there is still that ethereal vibe”, she says in the call while we imagine her sitting on an armchair with a bow in her hair. Imaginary that comes from many of his video clips. Every now and then in that province that she likes to talk about, time stops, or maybe UFOs arrive. Because the boredom of those who grew up in small places creates the best fantasies. And in fact she herself works on writing video clips, a fundamental part of her vision. We ask her if she is being recognized as she deserves: “No,” she says, laughing. «I don't think people know that I write and produce my own songs, as well as the videos. At the risk of saying something obvious, but it's important to me. I don't feel comfortable knowing that someone else is taking too much care of my career. I try to be part of everything.”
Speaking of videos, the one for his latest single Bittersweet the protagonist is Sean Kaufman, star of that hit Gen Z called Summer in your eyes (The Summer I Tuned Pretty). Madison hadn't seen the series: «I think I'm the only one who hasn't seen it. My friends were obsessed with it, they told me: “choose it, it's the best, we love it”. They were right, it's beautiful, professional. We worked very well. And at this point I will also watch the series.” In the video Madison and Sean experience the end of a relationship in a neighborhood on Wisteria Lane. The province is doing well as we said before.
And if you've been listening to Tame Impala's new album a lot lately, Mayhem by Lady Gaga, a Man's Best Friend by Sabrina Carpenter, now it's time to focus on her album. We ask her how she sees the state of female pop. “I'm happy that the girls have their space and I'm happy to be considered part of the group.” Although growth is all at its own pace, aiming for the long term and with the difficulties of those who were much discussed online at a young age (he talks about it in his book The Half of It).
Now he uses social media very little, practically only for work. «There are parts of my life that I don't feel the need to post. When I'm with my friends I don't think about taking photos for Instagram. I'm trying to balance myself and protect myself, you know how social media is.”
Meanwhile, recently those who wanted to watch and hear her were able to take advantage of the Victoria's Secret fashion show where she was a musical guest, as well as parading dressed as an angel. «Iconic», I say. «I was honored when they asked me to do it. And I'll tell you, I was very happy that it went well, I didn't think so.” We ask her why she says this: «We had little time to prepare. Thank goodness there were so many people who helped me and made it possible.” Let's talk about those wings: «They are not so easy to put on. I was lucky because mine weren't very heavy.” And we're sure those wings will be taking her on tour very soon.
