Jay-Z and D’Angelo have released their new song with filmmaker and musician Jeymes Samuel, which is taken from Samuel’s new movie, The Book of Clarence. “I Want You Forever”—D’Angelo’s first widely available new song since 2019—is “nine minutes and 32 seconds of absolute soulful, biblical bliss,” the director said. Jay-Z co-produced the biblical comedy-drama, having worked with Samuel on 2021’s The Harder They Fall. The Book of Clarence is in cinemas today, starring Lakeith Stanfield in the titular role.
Another song on the soundtrack, “Hallelujah Heaven,” features Lil Wayne, Buju Banton, and Shabba Ranks. Doja Cat and Kodak Black are on the song “Jeezu.” Every song on the soundtrack—out now via Roc Nation—is credited to Jeymes Samuel himself. Samuel’s Book of Clarence score is also out now (via Milan Records).
D’Angelo has still not released a follow-up to Black Messiah. Read about the 2014 LP in “The History of Pitchfork’s Reviews Section in 38 Reviews.”
