Levant returns three years after the release of his latest album and does so by participating in the Sanremo Music Festival 2023 with the song I LIVE, that already from the first listening it was perceived it would be difficult to get those words out of our heads. If the song known in the competition tells us about the difficult theme of postpartum depression experienced by the artist, between perpetually opposing moods, his new recording project draws a real rebirth, made of discoveries and new awareness.
Let’s start from the beginning. INVINCIBLE is the opening piece. A very powerful song that to an attentive ear will bring back the closing melodies of Magmamemoryhis previous work. Invincible has the same chords as Arcanum 13, only one octave lower and with faster bpm. A bit like starting with the phrase “Where were we…“. Arcanum 13 closed the past, Invincible opens this new chapter.
On the wave of what has been and has produced, we find METER And MATER. The first seems to be the perfect continuation of his goodbye foreverthe second instead catapults us straight-straight into his Instruction Manualthe singer-songwriter’s first studio album.
Between the desire to want to continue what has been and the desire to write new facets of it, what I would define as ‘commitment songs’ integrate.
Surprise his exposure through art with IT HURTS HERE which appears as a direct response to the political and even social criticism for the days of delirium that we live contained in CAPITAL, MY CAPITAL.
He wants to have fun Claudia and proves it all in LIGHTsong produced with a bridge that lightens all the heaviness of life and makes you dance, like its dancer.
However, now we need to give space to the epiphanies of this recording project. There is FUTURE SOUL which is a dedication to the daughter. With every listen she makes you think how lucky she is to have a mom like her. If in the latter we would all like to be the little one Almain BLUE IRIS AND LIQUID HEART we have only one constant thought: We want someone who loves us like Peter loves Claudia/Levant. A song that is a light, a gift. The hope that someone knows how to love us despite our inner ghosts.
I left for last I MISS YOU, because for me the most beautiful of the whole album. Here it will be really difficult for tears not to create a furrow on the cheeks. Who knows the discography of Levant he knows that his father’s songs are always the most poignant.
“No answer is already the answer that it’s late“, a “I miss you” which will never receive an answer. In these notes we find the nest and the years characterized by flights of fancy, as well as flowering lemons: his childhood in Sicily and the years in which he did everything possible not to think about what was inside.
In conclusion FUTURE WORK seems to be his best album to date. A project made of masterful texts and exceptional productions. The sound instead is the union of all his previous albums. Some songs seem to come from Magmamemory And Take care of yourselfbut more mature. A crescendo that takes you to the stomach, perhaps because it is so introspective but also so carnal.
Future workin my opinion, confirms Levant as one of the best Italian singer-songwriters who, thanks to her ‘Opera’, teaches us that for a new beginning we must start from the end.
