The song focuses on one of the most delicate and universal moments of relationships:
the one in which intimacy stops protecting and becomes total exposure. “Your
cold eyes like guns speak for themselves more than words” sing Kukla,
transforming the gaze into a weapon and sincerity into a blow that doesn't ask for
permit. There is no violence, but a disarming clarity: when you know each other
really, getting hurt is as easy as telling yourself the truth.
“How do I know you” moves like an emotional duel, made up of expectations,
measurements and retained voltages. The refrain “shoot, if you want to shoot, shoot me
now” does not invoke destruction, but stages the decisive moment in which
you choose whether to sink the blow or lower the weapon. It's a showdown of two
lives that have already shared too much to lie to each other again.
From a sound point of view, the song is a suspended and controlled synthpop ballad, built on soft and contemporary electronics that accompanies the lyrics without
dominate it, leaving room for the voice and its fragility. Production works
by subtraction, maintaining a constant tension that remains under the skin and finds
in the chorus an immediate and memorable point of synthesis. With this single
Kukla continues a coherent authorial path, capable of holding together
emotional writing and pop vision, intimacy and precision. “How do I know you” Not
it talks about love when it is born, but when it reaches that point where you have to look at yourself
in the eyes means deciding whether to stay or let go.
“There are love stories that end without any noise – declares Kukla – and then there are others that reach a point of stalemate, where silence weighs more than words and a look is enough to say everything. “How do I know you” was born exactly there: in the instant in which two people find themselves facing each other, aware that they know each other so thoroughly that they know where they can hit each other, and how much they can hurt themselves”.
