The daughter of John Amos, the Good Times actor whose death at the age of 84 was announced Tuesday, revealed that she learned about her father's death at the same time as the public, even though Amos died in August.
“I am without words… Our family has received the heartbreaking news that my Dad, John Allen Amos, Jr., transitioned on August 21st,” Shannon Amos wrote on social media Tuesday, hours after her father's death was publicly announced by her brother KC
“We are devastated and left with many questions about how this happened 45 days ago, learning about it through the media like so many of you.”
In the years before Amos' death, his children were involved in a bitter and public fight over his care and legacy, with both siblings leveling claims against one another; as the Hollywood Reporter writing in a 2023 feature about the family's fighting, Shannon accused KC of elder abuse, mishandling finances, and impersonating his own father. KC has denied all the claims.
The rift between the siblings apparently eroded to the point where neither one was communicating with the other, which is how Shannon found out her father died Tuesday when KC issued a statement to the media announcing his father died back in August.
Shannon Amos continued, “This should be a time of honoring and celebrating his life, yet we are struggling to navigate the wave of emotions and uncertainties surrounding his passing. Still, there is some semblance of peace in knowing my father is finally free.”
According to KC's statement Tuesday, the actor died of natural causes in Los Angeles on August 21. “He was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold… and he was loved the world over,” the statement said. “Many fans consider him their TV father. He lived a good life. His legacy will live on in his outstanding works in television and film as an actor.”
